Types of support
Grants
Grants have been offered for things like workplace EV charge points, heat pumps and other low-carbon heating, and industrial energy efficiency and decarbonisation. They typically cover a proportion of costs, require applications before work starts, and often use approved installers. Some are run nationally, others by local authorities, combined authorities or growth hubs, sometimes funded for limited periods.
Tax reliefs
Capital allowances let businesses deduct qualifying capital spending from taxable profits. Over recent years there have been enhanced or full expensing allowances for plant and machinery, and specific first-year allowances for zero-emission vehicles and EV charging equipment. Company car BiK rates also favour zero-emission vehicles. Your accountant can confirm what applies in your accounting period.
Loans and green finance
Public development banks, regional funds and high-street lenders offer loans or asset finance for energy projects, sometimes at preferential rates for green investments. Some providers offer energy-as-a-service or PPA models where they fund the equipment and you pay from savings.
Business rates
Rules on how on-site renewables and heat pumps affect business rates have changed over time and differ across the UK nations. Check with your local authority or a rating adviser.
Export payments
If you generate electricity, the Smart Export Guarantee requires larger suppliers in Great Britain to offer a tariff for exported power. Rates vary widely between suppliers and are worth comparing.
Obligations to be aware of
- ESOS (Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme): mandatory energy assessments for larger undertakings, with a regular compliance cycle.
- SECR (Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting): energy and carbon disclosure in annual reports for quoted and large companies and LLPs.
- MEES (Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards): minimum EPC ratings for letting commercial property in England and Wales, with tighter standards proposed for the future.
- Public procurement: some public-sector contracts ask bidders for carbon reduction plans.
